A sick parrot can be a huge worry for you as an owner. Even though they are extremely handy birds in many ways, but when it comes to diseases and illnesses, they are not as durable. Like any other animal, they also require quality care or it can become severe and deadly for the bird if the owner is not attentive.
How to Care for a Sick Parrot
- Get Your Parrot Some Warm Condition
Parrots like to keep themselves warm and absorb most of their energy and metabolism to warm their body. Get your parrot some artificial heat or something similar and let him use its energy to keep himself warm and deal with the disease.
· Provide Your parrot Some Moist Conditions
If your parrot is suffering from respiratory disease, then provide him some moist conditions to help your bird deal with the condition. A vaporizer or a humidifier will be ideal or you may place the cage in damp locations of your house such as the bathroom and run the hot water in your shower.
· Supply Your Parrot Plenty of Liquids
Parrots often get dehydrated when they are sick. So, make plenty of fluids and supply them to your parrot regularly. Your parrot may not drink all the fluids by himself, so you have to monitor the fluids especially when your parrot’s body temperature increased by the disease and disrupted their digestion process. Try some apple juice, electrolyte solutions, or even water using your fingers, a spoon, a dropper, etc.
· Provide Your Parrot Some Nutritious Foods
When your parrot is sick, provide them a good amount of nutritious foods to help your parrot fight the disease. Give your parrot easily digestible foods such as carbohydrates and other similar foods such as wheat cream, papaya juice, honey, molasses, infant rice cereals, etc.
If your parrot does not eat or vomits all the food, then your parrot might be suffering from a sour crop. This is a severe condition requiring immediate attention. A parrot can only survive for a few days without eating anything. If your parrot is suffering from a sour crop, then he may not anything again and won’t last long if the condition goes untreated.
